EPA Proposes to Delete Renora Site in Edison from Superfund List
Release Date: 01/21/2000
Contact Information:
(#00017) New York, N.Y. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that all cleanup work has been completed at the Renora, Inc. federal Superfund site in Edison Township, making it no longer a threat to human health and the environment. The Agency is proposing to delete it from the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites, and is seeking public comment on this proposal.
The one-acre site was used for collecting, storing and hauling waste oil and hazardous wastes from 1978 to 1982. Spills and container leaks from accumulated wastes contaminated soils on the site. The state revoked the owner's permit to operate and the site was abandoned in 1982. From 1984 to 1985, a group of parties responsible for the contamination removed visibly contaminated soils and the contents of drums, tankers and truck trailers, and arranged for the proper off-site shipment and disposal of the wastes. In addition, a fence was installed around the perimeter of the site to prevent public access. This work was performed with EPA oversight under the terms of a consent order with the federal government. In 1990, the responsible parties removed and disposed of more than 2,000 cubic yards of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated soil under the terms of a second Superfund consent order. A follow-up action, covered under the same order, was taken in 1995 in which 3,900 cubic yards of soil polluted with polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were removed from the site. These cleanups eliminated any potential threat the soils may have posed to public health and the environment. Based on a comprehensive review of the Superfund cleanup and several post cleanup inspections, EPA and the state of New Jersey concluded that all the appropriate site cleanup work has been completed. Deletion of a site from the NPL does not make the site ineligible for any additional cleanup that may become necessary in the future. EPA has deleted 16 NPL sites in New Jersey since the Federal Superfund program began. There are 52 sites where actual long-term cleanups are underway and 26 sites where cleanups have been completed in the state. The public is invited to comment on the proposed decision to delete this site from the NPL. The public comment period began on January 19, 2000 and will end February 18, 2000. Written comments should be addressed to: Grisell V. Diaz-Cotto, U.S. EPA, 290 Broadway, 19th floor, New York, New York, 10007- 1866. Written comments can also be faxed to Ms. Diaz-Cotto at (212) 637-4429 or e-mailed to [email protected]. |
