MAN ADMITS CFC SMUGGLING
Scott Campion of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, pleaded guilty on April 3, in U.S. District Court in Bangor, Maine, to one felony violation of the Clean Air Act for knowingly importing 77,000 pounds of the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant CFC-12 into the United States without required federal consumption allowances. Campion was an employee of a Canadian automobile parts company which operated under the name of City Sales Ltd., in Fredericton. City Sales sold CFC-12 to large automotive repair chains in the United States. CFC-12 is a refrigerant used in automobile air conditioners which, when released into the atmosphere, depletes the earth's protective ozone layer, exposing people to increased levels of ultraviolet radiation that can cause cataracts and skin cancer. When sentenced, Campion faces a maximum of five years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Customs Service and the Internal Revenue Service.
