EPA AND USDA SEEK NOMINATIONS FOR NEWLY FORMED ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON FOOD QUALITY PROTECTION ACT

EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are establishing the Committee to Advise on Reassessment and Transition (CARAT), under the auspices of EPA’s National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology. CARAT will be asked to provide advice on tolerance reassessment for pesticides, as required by the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), as well as strategic approaches for pest management planning. EPA will accept nominations for membership on the committee until May 26. Instructions for submitting nominations are provided in the Federal Register notice, which is expected to be published on May 12. The mission statement for this committee is available at: https://www.epa.gov/pesticides. This committee is preceded by the Tolerance Reassessment Advisory Committee and will be guided by the principles set forth by Vice President Gore for EPA and USDA to work together to ensure smooth implementation of FQPA through use of sound science, consultation with stakeholders, increased transparency and reasonable transition for agriculture. This committee will be co-chaired by EPA Acting Deputy Administrator Michael McCabe and USDA Deputy Secretary Richard Rominger.
