37 companies nationwide join Performance Track program
(San Francisco, Calif. -- 04/27/2006) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced four Arizona companies as its newest members in a program that rewards facilities that voluntarily exceed environmental regulatory requirements.
“Performance Track members are demonstrating new ways of achieving tangible environmental results by working collaboratively with government and demonstrating the business value of their environmental leadership,” said Wayne Nastri, the EPA’s administrator for the Pacific Southwest Region. “This relationship leads to greater efficiency and reduced costs for both Performance Track facilities and environmental regulators.”
Arizona members include:
- Intel’s Ocotillo Campus in Chandler, which manufactures semiconductors, aims to reduce non-hazardous solid waste generated by 21 percent, or 1,500 tons annually, and save 70 million gallons of water.
- Forever Resorts, headquartered in Scottsdale, owns and operates resort properties in national and state parks, recreation areas and national forests throughout North America, and has 23 facilities in the Performance Track program. The corporate headquarters committed to reduce non-hazardous waste generated by 3 percent, or 1.56 tons annually.
- A subsidiary of Forever Resorts, Sun Country Marine West LLC in Page, assembles houseboats, deck boats, and docks, and aims to reduce the use of dibasic ester, a paint stripper, by 44 percent.
- The City of Scottsdale, which includes more than 1000 employees, has committed to add 1,200 acres of land and habitat to the McDowell-Sonoran Preserve -- an increase of more than 10 percent to the 11,000 acres the city has previously purchased or preserved.
The EPA welcomed 37 facilities from 24 states as its newest members in the National Environmental Performance Track program, which rewards facilities that work with their communities, set three-year goals for continuous improvements in environmental performance and have internal systems in place to manage their environmental impacts. Only facilities with a record of sustained compliance with environmental requirements are eligible to participate in this program.
Since its inception in June 2000, the program has over 400 members in 46 states and Puerto Rico who have made more than 1,500 commitments to the environment. To date, Performance Track members have collectively reduced their water use by 1.9 billion gallons, conserved close to 9,000 acres of land, and increased their use of recycled materials by nearly 120,000 tons.
Participating facilities receive a low priority status for routine inspections; reduced regulatory, administrative and reporting burdens; and public recognition. These benefits translate to greater efficiency and reduced costs for both Performance Track facilities and environmental regulators.
