U.S. EPA, SANGER BOATS SETTLE RIGHT-TO-KNOW CASE FOR $9,391

U.S. EPA NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS:

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) announced that Sanger Boats, of Fresno, Calif., has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $9,391 for alleged violations of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).  U.S. EPA negotiated a settlement with Sanger Boats prior to filing the complaint, allowing the Agency to simultaneously file the civil complaint and consent agreement.  U.S. EPA alleged that Sanger Boats' facility at 3316 E. Annadale Avenue in Fresno, failed to file reports estimating its releases of styrene to the environment during 1994, 1995 and 1996.  The alleged violations were discovered during a routine inspection.  EPCRA requires annual reports to the U.S. EPA and the State from manufacturing facilities with 10 or more employees that use or manufacture certain toxic chemicals over a specified threshold amount.  The reports provide estimates of the amounts of each toxic chemical released to the environment, treated or recycled on-site, or transferred off-site to another facility.  Each year U.S. EPA publishes a nationwide report entitled the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Public Data Release which summarizes the prior year's submissions and provides detailed trend analysis of toxic chemical releases in all 50 states and all U.S. territories.
