(Dallas, Texas – June 20, 2008) The Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development and EPA Region 6 are conducting a pilot project to evaluate alternative methods for reducing
large volumes of debris from Hurricane Katrina. The project will study the use of a thermal treatment
process, known as an air curtain burner, as an option to expedite debris removal in a cost-effective and
environmentally sound manner. Vegetative debris and construction and demolition debris that does not
contain asbestos material will be combusted during this pilot project. The vegetative portion of the test is
scheduled to occur on June 24-25. The construction and demolition debris portion is scheduled for
June 26-27, weather permitting. Safety precautions will be taken to ensure that the project is protective of
public health. The test site is located at 5022 Paris Road, Chalmette, Louisiana .
