$2.7 Million in Grants Awarded to Study Hazardous Substance Clean Up at Superfund Sites

(12/11/03) To transform land contaminated by hazardous waste into profitable new businesses, $2.7 million in grants for research on risk assessment and clean up methods for Superfund sites were announced by Paul Gilman, EPA’s Assistant Administrator for Research and Development. In addition, the grants include research on increasing community involvement in planning to redevelop the land for new business or recreational use. Grants were awarded to: University of California, Riverside, Calif., for $200,000; Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Fla., for $396,000; St. Thomas University, Miami, Fla., for $192,000; Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Fla., for $400,000; Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Mo., for $398,000, College of Mount Saint Vincent, Riverdale, N.Y., for $389,000; Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio, for $337,000; and the University of Texas, San Antonio, Texas, for $391,000. These projects were funded through EPA’s Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program. EPA’s laboratories, research centers, and grantees are building the scientific foundation needed to support the Agency’s mission to safeguard human health and the environment.
