EPA Sponsors Essentials for Healthy Home Practitioners Course to be held March 13-14 in Washington, D.C.

PHILADELPHIA (March 12, 2012) - Attention licensed home inspectors, lead risk assessors, health and housing advocates, property managers, pest management professionals and environmental health practitioners.

The Essentials for Healthy Home Practitioners Course, a free, two-day training course sponsored by EPA will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13 and 14 at the American Public Health Association (APHA), 800 I Street NW, Washington D.C. in the main floor conference area. The class is open to energy auditors, weatherization contractors, public health professionals and others who work in the healthy homes industry.

This course is taught by staff from the National Center for Healthy Housing, and is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment. The course will focus on the connection between health and housing. Attendees will learn techniques on taking a holistic approach to identify and resolve problems that threaten the health and well-being of residents. In addition, they will practice collaboration methods to make healthy homes a reality in their community.

The course will cover:

· Housing conditions and the health problems associated with them
· How to characterize risk using the epidemiological triangle
· Populations that may be at higher risk for housing-related disease and injury
· Housing systems that contribute to a comfortable living space
· Codes that can be used to enforce remediation of housing-based health threats
· Seven principles of healthy housing
