Kentucky Receives EPA Grant to Expand Environmental Leadership Program

(Atlanta – August 25, 2005) The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (KDEP) was recently selected for an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) State Innovation Grant to expand its environmental leadership program.  KDEP will receive $185,000 for a two-year project that will develop partnerships with other states in the southeast and on the Kentucky borders to create an innovative membership program that recognizes and supports companies in achieving positive results in pollution reduction at their facilities. 

KDEP’s project, Implementing Kentucky’s Environmental Leadership Program – A Vertical Start-up Model with Multi-State Applicability, will assist in aligning previously separate volunteer leadership projects such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Partnership Program, Energy Star, Green Buildings, and Smart Growth. 

The EPA State Innovation Grant Competition for 2005 -2006 received 26 state applications, representing all 10 EPA Regions.  The KDEP project is one of seven selected for funding under the grant competition, totaling $1.5 million in awarded grant funds for all projects.
