| The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it will begin a Superfund removal at the College Grove Battery Chip site in College Grove, Tennessee on June 19, 2000. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency's Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).
The removal will include:
- extensive sampling of each property to determine contaminated soil locations,
- excavation and treatment of contaminated soil,
- transportation and disposal of materials in a proper landfill,
- restoration of the site (including backfill, grade, and revegetation).
Each residential property will require 1 to two weeks for cleanup. The removal is expected to be completed by June 2001 at an estimated cost of $3,000,000.
The College Grove Battery Chip site is located in the College Grove Community and the surrounding areas within Williamson and Rutherford Counties. The site consists of residential properties that contain battery chips that were placed in driveways, around barns and other areas as fill material. Previous sampling of some properties indicated elevated levels of lead in the soil. Lead is regulated as a hazardous substance and has been shown to cause adverse health effects in humans, especially children.
Persons interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to visit the EPA Community Relations Center that will open during June 2000. The Center is located in the Senior Enrichment Center at 8607 Horton Highway, College Grove, Tennessee. Office hours will be from 8:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. |
