CHICAGO (Sept. 20, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has issued an administrative consent order to Reilly Industries Inc. that requires the company to keep records of repairs done to the cooling equipment at its chemical plant at 1500 S. Tibbs Ave., Indianapolis, Ind.
The order resolves EPA allegations that the company failed to keep records of repairs done on seven industrial process and three comfort cooling units to prevent leaks of excessive amounts of chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, that deplete stratospheric ozone.
"EPA's mission is to protect public health and the environment," said Regional Administrator Thomas V. Skinner. "We will take whatever steps are needed to ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act."
When CFC refrigerants deplete the stratospheric ozone layer, dangerous amounts of cancer-causing ultraviolet rays from the sun strike the earth. Production of some of these chemicals was stopped in 1995, and federal law strictly controls their use and handling.
