Unitek Environmental Guam to pay $14,000 for hazardous waste violations

HONOLULU -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently reached a settlement with Unitek Environmental Guam that requires the company to pay $14,000 for hazardous waste transporter storage violations discovered during an inspection in 2003.

"To ensure community, worker and environmental safety, it is critical for companies handling wastes to comply with the rules," said Jeff Scott, the EPA's director for the waste management programs in the Pacific Southwest region. "The rules for storing and transporting hazardous waste are straightforward and we expect a very high level of compliance."

Unitek is a transporter of hazardous waste and an environmental consultant company in Guam. The company collects, removes, transports and ships hazardous waste out of Guam for proper disposal.

EPA investigators discovered during inspections in June of 2003 that the company, on four separate occasions, stored hazardous waste longer than the 10-day maximum storage time limit, a violation of hazardous waste transporter storage requirements.

The waste has since been shipped for disposal to a proper hazardous waste disposal facility as required by the EPA's hazardous waste regulations.
