National Brownfields Conference in Dallas December 6-8

     The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will co-sponsor the largest and most comprehensive conference on Brownfields Dec. 6-8, 1999, in Dallas at the Adams Mark Hotel. EPA Administrator Carol Browner is scheduled to participate in this free conference.

     EPA Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke said, "The U.S. Conference of Mayors has identified Brownfields as the No. 1 obstruction to development in cities. This conference will provide vital information to help communities, grassroots organizations and developers restore our urban areas and neighborhoods while protecting public health."

     Brownfields are abandoned or under-used industrial or commercial sites whose redevelopment and productive use is hampered by industrial pollution. EPA's Brownfields program brings together stakeholders from private, government and community groups to assess, clean and return these properties to productive use.

     The General Accounting Office estimates there are 450,000 Brownfields sites affecting virtually every community in our nation.

     The Brownfields '99 Conference will present panels of experts in four areas: finance, property assessment and cleanup, redevelopment and law. Separate presentations will be geared to beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of Brownfields experience.
