SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY PANEL MEETING TO BE HELD ON PLANT
PESTICIDES AND CUMULATIVE RISK ASSESSMENT

On Dec. 8 and 9, EPA will hold a two-day meeting of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel, 1800 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Va. The Dec. 8 session will discuss the proposed Agency data requirements for protein plant-pesticides, including both product characterization and potential effects to non-target organisms. Product characterization includes the identity of the pesticidal substance and the genetic material necessary for its production. On Dec. 9, the SAP will review the cumulative risk assessment methodology of pesticide substances that have a common mechanism of toxicity. EPA presented its draft approach to evaluate the cumulative hazard of pesticide substances that share a common mechanism at the Sept. 21-24 SAP meeting. EPA has revised the guidance according to SAP recommendations and has completed the chapters that pertain to assessing exposure to two or more pesticides that share a common mechanism of toxicity. This is a significant early step as the Agency proceeds to develop a sound and scientifically credible process for conducting cumulative risk assessments to protect public health and the environment. The Dec 8 - 9 meeting was announced in the Federal Register on Nov. 15 (https://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr). A meeting agenda and background documents including the cumulative risk assessment will be available at: https://www.epa.gov/scipoly/sap or may be obtained by contacting the Public Information and Records Integrity Branch, Information Resources and Services Division (7502C), Office of Pesticide Programs, U.S.EPA, 401 M St., S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460, telephone: 703-305-5805. This guidance will be released for public comment in January.
