EPA Administrator Browner to Join Mayor Tom Murphy at Pittsburgh Brownfields Redevelopment Project
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol M. Browner will join Mayor Tom Murphy at the Pittsburgh, Pa. site of a Clinton Administration Brownfields Redevelopment Project on Friday, May 3. Using a $200,000 EPA grant, Pittsburgh community leaders are working with EPA to find ways to clean up and redevelop this abandoned, contaminated site and return it to productive community use.
President Clinton in his State of the Union address announced a new tax incentive to encourage redevelopment at Brownfields sites across the country. Administrator Browner will discuss how the President's proposed tax incentive will help Pittsburgh.
Brownfields Redevelopment Projects are national models for revitalizing contaminated urban properties. Through this program, federal grants are used as seed money to spur investment. Developers are sought to restore abandoned sites to new uses, thereby increasing property values, stimulating tax revenues and revitalizing inner-city neighborhoods. Brownfields projects yield economic benefits and protect public health and the environment by encouraging development on existing sites, rather than in undeveloped areas.
