EPA Completes Hazardous Substances Removal at Locust Grove Mercury Response Site

The United States Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it has completed a Superfund hazardous substances removal at the Locust Grove Mercury Response Site in Locust Grove, Henry County, GA. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal was completed under the authority and direction of the EPA Region 4 Emergency Response and Removal Branch. The Locust Grove Mercury Response Site consisted of a residential mobile home park located on Indian Creek Drive that was contaminated from the release of Mercury. Air contamination throughout the residence was above action levels although elemental mercury was only observed in the carpeting of the dining room area. The removal included sampling and analysis, as well as decontamination of the house and household items. The activities included removal of furnishings, clothing, appliances, carpeting and other contaminated materials from the house. Heating, venting and air monitoring cycle materials were bagged and cleaning solution was applied to flooring, countertops, and non-porous surfaces. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare, or the environment.
