GRANTS AWARDED TO EIGHT STATES TO STREAMLINE INFORMATION GATHERING AND REPORTING
EPA has awarded $500,000 grants to eight states---Arizona, Florida, Indiana, New Hampshire, New York, Maryland, Oklahoma and Wisconsin---to help reduce paperwork in the required gathering of environmental data and to improve the means of sharing the information with EPA and the public. Much of the environmental information which EPA needs to implement its programs is gathered by state agencies. Through a joint effort, “One Stop Reporting,” EPA and state agencies are working to reduce the current reporting burden by developing a coherent system to manage information, including expanded electronic reporting, and to expedite public access to the information through websites and other means. Since 1996, a total of $10.5 million has been awarded to 21 states to help modernize data systems and institute data management reforms that will make it easier and less expensive for state agencies and regulated facilities to manage environmental reporting responsibilities and increase public access to environmental information.
