Whitman & NASA Administrator O’ Keefe to Unveil Groundbreaking Renewable Energy Source and NASA Facility

(05/06/03) On Thursday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m., EPA Administrator Christie Whitman will join NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe and others in opening a new chapter in environmental history. The two administrators will take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center to recognize the first federal government facility to use landfill gas on-site for energy. Officials representing Prince George's County, Md., and Toro Energy, Inc. will join Administrators O'Keefe and Whitman for the event at NASA's Greenbelt, Md. facility. Local officials will lead a tour of the Sandy Hills Landfill in Bowie, Md., the source of the gas used at Goddard Space Flight Center, after the event. The landfill gas project was completed under a utility services contract between GSFC and Toro Energy, Inc. EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program is a voluntary assistance and partnership program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable energy source. This EPA program worked with NASA to assess the technical and economic feasibility of using methane gas to fuel boilers at GSFC.
