The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is helping the city of New Orleans get back on its feet by providing household hazardous waste collection on Saturday for neighborhood cleanups called Operation New Orleans.

The agency will accept residential household hazardous waste at collection sites located at Lusher Charter Extension, 719 South Carrolton Avenue and at Xavier University on Washington Avenue on Saturday, January 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

EPA will accept a variety of residential household hazardous waste, including batteries, paint and workshop supplies, cleaning and pool supplies, automotive products, solvents, pesticides and thermometers, and lawn and garden products.  The collection efforts target two neighborhoods:  Gert Town near Xavier University and the Carrollton area from the river to Claiborne Avenue.  EPA will not accept hazardous wastes from commercial establishments.  Once collected and separated, the wastes will be shipped to proper disposal facilities.

EPA is working in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality under a unified command to collect household hazardous wastes throughout hurricane-impacted parishes.  The agencies have regular curbside collection in Orleans Parish.  For specific information on household hazardous waste collection in your area, please call (800) 401-1327, or visit http://epa.gov/region6/katrina/parishes.htm.
