Contaminated Utah smelter site targeted for EPA cleanup

- Denver -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today added the Davenport and Flagstaff
Smelters Site near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake County, Utah, to the
Superfund National Priorities List.
EPA proposed the Davenport and Flagstaff Smelters Site for the NPL in December 2000. Wastes from the two smelters contaminated soil in the area with lead and arsenic. The site includes several residential properties, a condominium complex and a number of undeveloped lots.
Because exposure to high levels of lead and arsenic may be particularly risky for children, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and EPA will remove contaminated soils from the yards of homes in the area, dispose of the material at an appropriate off-site location, spread clean soil on the yards and replace landscaping. The non-residential area will be investigated separately.
