EPA Executive Challenges Others to Walk to School

     Today U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene challenged his fellow Dallas/Fort Worth area executives to join him in celebrating International Walk to School Week October 4-8, 2004.
 
     Now in its eighth year, International Walk to School Week is expected to include 3,000 schools from all 50 states and 37 countries.  The idea is to walk together with a purpose:  to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment.
 
     "Vehicles contribute to the Dallas/Fort Worth area's air quality problems," Greene said.  "As parents drop their children off at school each morning, the traffic congestion around our area schools aggravates the situation, making health effects such as asthma more acute."

     Greene will walk his grandchild to school on Tuesday, October 5, to underscore steps we can all take to reduce the miles we drive and the pollution we contribute to our community's air.  He challenges area executives to join him and almost 3 million others by walking or biking with their children, grandchildren or loved ones to school.
