(11/13/03) Various U.S. Government agencies will celebrate Geography Awareness Week & Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on Nov.19-20 at EPA’s Mellon Auditorium, 1300 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C., from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days. GIS is mapping software that allows the user to customize the map by adding different layers of information, so comparisons can be made on available data. For example, EPA’s “Windows to My Environment” allows the user to map the locations of air monitors, air emissions of pollutants, and demographics (i.e., persons per square mile) all on one map. The centerpiece of this celebration will be a multi-agency exhibit demonstrating how GIS supports agencies in achieving their mission goals. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition, there will be an interactive exhibit where children can take a virtual journey along the route Lewis and Clark took across the country. Participating agencies are: EPA, Department of Interior, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Education, Federal Geographic Data Committee, National Capital Planning Commission, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
