Six North Carolina Organizations Receive 2013 Energy Star Awards

ATLANTA – Six organizations in North Carolina were honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with 2013 awards from the Energy Star Program. This award was given because of their outstanding leadership and commitment to protecting America’s environment through energy efficiency.

“EPA congratulates this year's Energy Star award winners,” said EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe. “Their commitment to superior energy efficiency makes these organizations valuable partners in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change.”

The winners were chosen from nearly 20,000 Energy Star partners, including manufacturers, retailers, public schools, hospitals, real estate companies, and home builders, for their long-term commitment to climate protection through greater energy efficiency.

Organizations are recognized in the following categories:

Partners of the Year--Sustained Excellence
Food Lion, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys and Reid's of Salisbury was recognized for its continued dedication to identifying, developing, and investing in new technologies and operational best practices to save energy and money.
Hanesbrands Inc. of Winston Salem was recognized for its ongoing improvements in energy performance and sustainability.
Lowe's Companies, Inc. of Mooresville was recognized for its unsurpassed strategic integration of ENERGY STAR into all aspects of retail, from product assortment to sales associate and consumer engagement, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to the program and distinguishing Lowe’s as an industry leader.
Southern Energy Management of Morrisville was recognized for helping to change the way people use energy in their homes.

Partners of the Year
Nationwide Marketing Group of Winston Salem was recognized for its remarkable commitment to ENERGY STAR,
increased education and member-training programs, strong promotions of ENERGY STAR certified products, and ongoing efforts to increase market share of ENERGY STAR certified products sold by its members.

Excellence Award
Cree, Inc. of Durham was recognized for its exemplary efforts in the area of cutting edge efficiency and product innovation.

For more than two decades, American consumers and businesses have continued to save energy and protect the environment through the Energy Star program. In 2012 alone, Americans, with the help of Energy Star, saved $24 billion on their energy bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 41 million vehicles. To date, more than 1.3 million new homes and nearly 20,000 office buildings, schools, and hospitals have earned the Energy Star. Since 2000, more than four billion Energy Star certified products have been sold.
