EPA HOSTS MARSH MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP IN LOUISIANA
EPA, with the participation of other federal agencies involved in implementing the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act, is hosting a workshop on marsh management in Louisiana. The Workshop, which will be held in New Orleans Aug. 16-18, will feature a wide range of perspectives from state and local governments, landowners, shrimpers, fishermen, hunters, environmental groups, scientists and other interested parties. EPA is engaged in an effort to develop a fair, flexible and scientifically-based position on marsh management. The Agency's Science Advisory Board (SAB) is currently conducting a scientific review of marsh management practices and will recommend criteria for reviewing marsh management proposals to EPA's Office of Water. The SAB's final report is expected before the end of 1994. Marsh management uses water control structures to protect, restore or enhance wetland functions. However, there have been concerns that some marsh management proposals would involve environmental harm, including adverse impacts on fishery resources. For more information on the workshop, contact Norm Thomas at 214-655-2260. For more information regarding the SAB review, contact Stephanie Sanzone at 202- 260-6557.
