WHAT: Announcement of five federal grants, totaling about $1.8 million, awarded in Michigan under President Obama’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m.

WHERE: Outside the John A. Hannah Administration Building, Michigan State University, in front of the Red Cedar River (please look for the tent).

BACKGROUND: President Obama’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is the largest investment in the Great Lakes in two decades. The initiative calls for aggressive efforts to address five priorities:
• Cleaning up toxics and toxic hot spots around the Great Lakes.
• Combating invasive species.
• Promoting nearshore health by protecting watersheds from polluted runoff.
• Restoring wetlands and other habitats.
• Accountability and working with strategic partners on outreach.

Five grants will be announced at Friday’s event:
• Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, $856,046.
• Saginaw Bay/Lake Huron Land Policy Project, Michigan State University, $399,287.
• Michigan State University, $65,001.
• Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, $295,000.
• Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa, $196,148.
