PETERSBURG, Va. - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator W. Michael McCabe today presented the South Central Wastewater Authority with EPA’s Regional Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award.
"Many people take good water quality for granted. Much of the improvement in water quality can be attributed to wastewater treatment facilities. This Virginia authority, has made a remarkable turnaround," said McCabe.
"The staff of the South Central Wastewater Authority is to be congratulated for its professionalism and should be proud of the recognition this award brings. The day-to-day operation of this facility is in the hands of highly trained individuals devoted to the environment," said Dennis Treacy, Director of Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality.
This award is designed for municipal wastewater systems. South Central Wastewater Authority used innovation and determination to modify plant processes to enhance phosphorus and nitrogen removal and to use up-to-date recording and reporting systems for monitoring data.
The award, given annually, was presented to the South Central Wastewater Authority’s chairman, executive director, board, and employees. The wastewater treatment plant serves five Virginia municipalities: City of Petersburg, City of Colonial Heights, and the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, and Chesterfield.
