EPA TO ANNOUNCE INITIAL AGREEMENTS REACHED UNDER VOLUNTARY CONSUMER LABELING INITIATIVE FOR CLEANING & PESTICIDE PRODUCTS
Assistant Administrator of the U.S. EPA’s Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances, Dr. Lynn Goldman, will hold a press briefing Sept. 4 to announce the first step in a series of changes that are being taken to improve the safe-use, environmental and health information contained on the labels of certain household cleaning products, and indoor and outdoor pesticide products. The changes are the result of the first phase of EPA’s Consumer Labeling Initiative or “CLI,” an ongoing voluntary partnership with representatives of the cleaning products and pesticides industries, key federal agencies, public interest groups and other organizations. Industry representatives active in the CLI partnership will join Dr. Goldman for the announcement. They include representatives from: S.C. Johnson & Son Inc.; The Solaris Group, a unit of Monsanto Co.; The Clorox Co.; Proctor & Gamble; Bayer; and Responsible Industry of a Sound Environment, a trade organization.
Labeling changes agreed to by EPA and its CLI partners will make labels easier to read and more useful to consumers. For example, they will include simpler and more direct first-aid instructions to follow in an emergency, the inclusion of an emergency contact telephone number on all labels, and the use of common chemical names in the list of ingredients provided on labels. In addition, participants in the CLI have committed to continue researching product labeling improvements and to start a consumer education campaign on the importance of reading labels.
