EPA Presents Awards to Cape Citizens

Boston - EPA last night presented awards to ten citizens involved with the cleanup at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod, Mass. These citizens are all members of the Impact Area Review Team that meets monthly to discuss the investigation and cleanup of the Impact Area and training ranges on Camp Edwards.

EPA handed certificates of appreciation to the following people at the Bourne Best Western Hotel during its regularly scheduled meeting:
Michael Butler of Bourne
Tom Cambareri of the Cape Cod Commission
Judy Conron of Bourne
Evelyn Hayes of Yarmouthport
Richard Hugus of Falmouth
Dick Judge of Sandwich
James Kinney of Barnstable
Bob Mullennix of Bourne
Janet Pepin of Falmouth
Peter Schlesinger of Sandwich

This is the eighth year that the team has been meeting and several of the team members have been on the team since 1997 when it was established.

EPA also recognized the contributions made by three former members of the committee:
Joel Feigenbaum of Sandwich who passed away last year
Dick Prince of Bourne who passed away several years ago
Paul Zanis formerly Sandwich and now living in Florida

"All these citizens exemplify a commitment and community concern that is the hallmark of our country," said Robert W. Varney, EPA regional administrator. "They have worked hard and donated long hours to understand the complicated issues challenging the cleanup of Camp Edwards. Their work is safeguarding public health and the environment for all citizens on Cape Cod."

EPA established the Impact Area Review Team in 1997 to provide a forum for local citizens to participate so the agency can ensure a thorough and timely investigation and cleanup of Camp Edwards. Membership of the IART includes volunteers from the Upper Cape towns, federal and state regulatory agencies, the National Guard Bureau, and other military organizations at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). The IART meets the fourth Tuesday evening of each month at various locations in Bourne, Sandwich, Mashpee, and Falmouth.
