NTC DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR FRED HANSEN LEAVING EPA

Deputy Administrator Fred Hansen today announced that he will be leaving EPA in October to accept the position as head of Tri-Met, greater Portland’s regional public transportation authority.
“The highest honor in my career in public life has been the opportunity to serve President Clinton, Vice President Gore and Administrator Browner,” Hansen said. “Under the Clinton Administration, this country has made remarkable progress in protecting public health and the environment.
“However, I have been offered a unique opportunity to return to my native Oregon to manage one of the best transit systems in the country. I will miss my colleagues at EPA, but I look forward to working on behalf of the citizens of Oregon to help make even better the quality of life in that magnificent region.”
EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner said, “Fred Hansen has played a crucial role in the many environmental achievements of the Clinton Administration. Beyond his responsibilities for the day-to-day management of the agency, he has been instrumental in the reinvention of environmental regulations; the implementation of the new food safety law; and in helping develop other new policies to meet the environmental challenges of the future. We deeply will miss his counsel and his friendship.”
Hansen has been EPA’s Deputy Administrator since Oct. 18, 1994. Prior to joining EPA, Hansen directed the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for more than 10 years.
