PA EPA HOLDS PUBLIC MEETING ON THE DEFINTION OF SOLID WASTE
FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1996
EPA HOLDS PUBLIC MEETING ON THE DEFINITION OF SOLID WASTE
EPA will hold a public meeting on Nov. 19 to make information available on a project underway to revise the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations governing hazardous waste recycling. The meeting will be held at the Airport Hilton, 2399 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Va., from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 19. Under RCRA, EPA has promulgated regulations governing management of hazardous waste known as "Definition of Solid Waste." EPA is working on a rulemaking to modify the current federal hazardous waste recycling scheme to meet two goals: develop a clearer, simpler regulatory system for hazardous waste recycling that adequately protects people and the environment; and to remove disincentives to the safe recycling of hazardous waste. The purpose of the meeting is for EPA to present and explain the draft rulemaking options the Agency is considering. EPA believes the issues involved in this project are complex and difficult and an early discussion of the Agency's direction will benefit interested parties. EPA anticipates publishing a proposed rulemaking in the spring of 1997. Written materials will be handed out at the meeting. Materials will not be available prior to the meeting. Copies of the materials can be obtained by calling the RCRA/Superfund Hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
