The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sponsoring a joint conference with Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Ecologia to explain and to discuss chemical release reporting programs in each nation in El Paso, Texas, Aug. 27 and 28, 1998.

EPA’s program requires individual manufacturing, processing and federal facilities nationwide to submit annual reports listing the amounts of chemicals released into the air, land and water. These Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reports are the cornerstone of the Agency’s commitment to making important environmental information readily available to citizens. Armed with accurate and timely information, residents are able to work effectively with local industry to make environmental improvements in their individual communities.

The U.S. list of reportable chemicals includes more than 660 specific chemicals and 28 chemical categories. EPA’s program is continually being adjusted to make it easier for industries to report and easier for citizens to understand and use the annual analysis. Mexico is developing a similar program, the Registro de Emisiones Transferencia de Contaminantes (RETC).

This two-day conference will allow businessmen, government officials, scholars and scientists, and the general public to learn more about both TRI and RETC. Sessions are designed to encourage open discussions about successes and difficulties encountered in working with both programs. These exchanges should help improve programs in the United States and Mexico.

The U.S./Mexico Bi-National Pollution Release Transfer Registries Workshop will be held at the Camino Real Hotel at 101 S. El Paso St. Reservations and further information may be obtained by calling Rita Stiefvater with TASCON Inc. at (301) 315-9000, ext. 515 or e-mailing her at [email protected].
