EPA’S JOBS THROUGH RECYCLING PROGRAM AWARDS GRANTS
EPA’s Jobs Through Recycling (JTR) program is awarding $744,000 to six states and one multi-state organization as the winners of its fiscal year 1998 grants competition. The grants are used to work with businesses that process or manufacture recycled materials and end-products to expand both the tonnage of recyclable materials used and the number of jobs created. JTR funds projects that build a recycling market development infrastructure or demonstrate innovative ways to develop markets. The grants include:
- •$200,000 to California’s Integrated Waste Management Board and its partners, who will work to establish related recycling industries in close proximity to a large materials processing facility in the state.
•$140,000 to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources to partner with a community development bank to develop a dedicated loan fund for recycling businesses.
•$65,000 to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to launch a strategy to establish an infrastructure for cathode ray tube (from televisions and computer monitors) collection in response to a proposed state solid waste disposal ban.
•$80,000 to Arizona Department of Commerce who will expand regional markets for Arizona-made recycled products and create new recycling-based jobs in rural areas of the state;
•$113,000 to the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology to form recycling/reuse network within the state to increase recycling rates and jobs;
•$78,000 to the Missouri Department of Economic Development to analyze what industrial byproducts are generated in Missouri, determine what products could be manufactured from these materials and work with manufacturers to develop recycled products from these materials;
•$68,000 to the Mid-America Council of Recycling Officials (MACRO) and its 14 member states to conduct a recycling investment forum in Cincinnati, Ohio, in September 1999 in conjunction with the National Recycling Congress.
