WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making it easier to find information on toxic chemical releases in communities by making the “My Right-to-Know” (myRTK) application available in Spanish. For any location, myRTK maps facilities that report to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program and shows what chemicals are being released to air, water, and land. Users can find out about the potential health effects associated with the chemicals and learn whether a particular facility is in compliance with major environmental laws. The English and Spanish versions of myRTK are usable on smart phones and desktop computers.
TRI was established in 1986 by the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act and later expanded by the Pollution Prevention act of 1990. Together, the laws require facilities in certain industry sectors to report annually on releases, disposal and other waste management activities related to over 650 toxic chemicals. TRI data is available through myRTK and several other online TRI tools.
