(Boston, Mass. – Feb. 28, 2013) – Today, at the Climate Leadership Conference, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Center for Corporate Climate Leadership, the Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO), the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and The Climate Registry (TCR) is recognizing two New England companies with 2013 Climate Leadership Awards. Those New England companies being recognized for their climate leadership are Raytheon of Waltham, Mass. and Staples of Framingham, Mass.
EPA launched the Climate Leadership Awards in 2011 in partnership with ACCO, C2ES, and TCR, to recognize and incentivize exemplary corporate, organizational, and individual leadership in response to climate change. This year’s 23 award recipients include 17 companies, 4 public sector entities, and 2 individuals. These awardees have demonstrated leadership in managing and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in internal operations and throughout the supply chain, as well as integrating climate resilience into their operating strategies.
Raytheon and Staples will receive Goal Achievement Awards for Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management. Both companies publicly report and verify their GHG inventories and have achieved their aggressive GHG emissions reduction goals.
Under the EPA’s former Climate Leaders program, Raytheon set a goal of reducing total GHG emissions by 10 percent from 2008 to 2015. Raytheon achieved a 16 percent reduction by the end of 2011, meeting its goal several years ahead of schedule and exceeding its 10 percent reduction goal.
In 2003, Staples established a goal of reducing total GHG emissions by 7 percent from 2001 to 2010 under the EPA’s former Climate Leaders program. Staples exceeded its goal and cut 30 percent of its GHG, despite significant growth and acquisitions.
“These two New England companies are leading by example, demonstrating their commitment to addressing climate change through transparency and action. Leaders like Raytheon and Staples inspire and challenge others to set and meet climate goals,” stated Curt Spalding, EPA New England Regional Administrator.
This year’s award winners are being recognized at the Climate Leadership Conference awards dinner on Feb. 28 in Washington, D.C. The conference brings together leaders from business, government, academia, and nonprofits to exchange best practices on how to address climate change and run more competitive and sustainable operations.
