CHICORA MAN IS INSPECTOR OF THE YEAR

PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that Dennis W. Culley of Chicora, Butler County, has been named  "outstanding inspector of the year" for 1998.  Mr. Culley is an inspector for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.  EPA created the award to recognize outstanding commitment and dedication by state inspectors whose work supports the federal pesticide program.

Mr. Culley has been with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for 22 years as an inspector for the pesticides program.  Among his many accomplishments, he was the first in the state to institute the "Household Pesticide Disposal Program" conducted by the PA Department of Agriculture.  As a result of his efforts, residents in Butler, Allegheny and Lawrence counties have  an opportunity to legally and responsibly dispose of unwanted pesticide products.

Mr. Culley works in the Department of Agriculture’s Regional Office in Gibsonia. He was chosen from among all the candidates representing EPA’s mid-Atlantic region  -- Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

Eligibility for the award is based on consistently outstanding performance as an inspector, in addition to service as an environmental educator to the public and the regulated community.

Pesticide regulation occurs under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).  Although pesticides are beneficial, they can be deadly if mishandled or misused.  EPA regards FIFRA regulation and enforcement as vital to the protection of human health and the environment.
