NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY

(Kansas City, Kan., July 27, 2011) - A weather forecast calling for extreme heat has caused EPA Region 7 to relocate an outdoor news conference indoors on Thursday, July 28, to recognize the Metropolitan Energy Center (MEC) of Kansas City, Mo., as the selectee for a 2011 EPA Brownfields Job Training Grant.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks and Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James will recognize MEC for being selected from a national pool of applicants to train under-employed and unemployed residents living near brownfields sites in the Kansas City area.

WHAT: News Conference to Announce EPA Brownfields Job Training Grant

WHO: EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks, Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James, MEC Job Training Project Manager Bob Housh, and last year’s graduates of a similar job training program

WHEN: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 28, 2011

WHERE: (NOTE: NEW LOCATION) Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost, Kansas City, Mo. 64110

This event was previously scheduled to occur outdoors at the MEC Demonstration House, 917 Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard, Kansas City, Mo. 64110.

The EPA Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training Grant provides an opportunity for local communities and other stakeholders to receive information and technical assistance, and establish green job training opportunities for the improvement of brownfields sites.

Brownfields are real properties, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
