PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 27 to discuss plans associated with the Exide/General Battery Corporation investigation and cleanup. The meeting will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Muhlenberg High School, located at Sharp and Frances Street in Reading, Pa.
Under an EPA order, Exide is investigating the extent of lead contamination in soil near its plant in Laureldale and planning cleanup for properties that contain lead levels of possible concern. In June, 2001 sampling was also conducted to get a comprehensive picture of the lead levels in Bernhart Park in Muhlenberg Township.
Topics to be discussed include: the extent of lead contamination in soil located near the Exide plant; current and future plans to sample or clean up nearby residential properties; the status of the soil, reservoir sediment, and surface water sampling conducted at Bernhart Park; and other ongoing and future activities associated with the investigation.
For additional information, please contact EPA project manager, Khai Dao, at 215-814-5467. For information on-line about the Exide investigation and cleanup, go to EPA’s website at www.epa.gov/reg3wcmd/ca/pdf/pad990753089.pdf.
