PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $550,800 grant to the Village of Beech Bottom, Brooke County, West Virginia to help pay for new drinking water lines to service the residents of the north portion of the village.

Residents in the north end of the village currently use private wells that are contaminated with high levels of salt and sulphur, and are unfit for drinking water. Also, portions of the existing distribution system were built in the 1920s and are no longer capable of providing adequate fire protection.

“Providing safe, reliable drinking water is an important step in protecting public health. This grant will provide a safe, reliable source of drinking water and also improve fire protection for the residents of the Village of Beech Bottom,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The project will benefit 15 new customers, and allow the village to replace old, inadequate portions of the existing water lines with larger water lines. It will also help pay for a new garage with laboratory facilities.
The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $1 million project cost, and the village will use local funds to pay the balance.
