Small West Virginia Water System Cited For Drinking Water Violations at Bar

MARTINSBURG, W. Va. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cited the Pump House East water system in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, W.Va. for violating the Safe Drinking Water Act. The water system consists of a well that provides drinking water to the Pump House East, a bar that also provides food service.

EPA issued an administrative order, citing the water system for exceeding the maximum contaminant level for total coliform bacteria in its drinking water and failing to monitor its water for nitrate, nitrite and total coliform bacteria. These violations may pose a health risk to employees and customers who drink the water.

The EPA administrative order requires that the Pump House East water system notify users of the violations and related health risks, and how they will correct the problems. The Pump House East water system must provide a written progress report within 30 days to EPA and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

The Safe Drinking Water Act regulates public water systems. These regulations establish maximum contaminant levels, treatment techniques, water quality monitoring and reporting requirements for public water systems.
