AstraZeneca’s Westborough, Mass. Plant Earns EPA’s Energy Star

(Boston, Mass. – April 16, 2009) – AstraZeneca’s Westborough, Mass. plant is among the first four pharmaceutical plants across the country to earn Energy Star recognition from EPA. AstraZeneca’s plant earned the Energy Star for performing in the top 25 percent of energy performance nationwide.

Compared to similar pharmaceutical plants across the country, Energy Star -recognized facilities use nearly 35 percent less energy on average and collectively prevent the emission of 40,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

“We congratulate AstraZeneca for being an environmental leader in the pharmaceutical arena,” said acting EPA New England regional administrator Ira Leighton. “We’re pleased to see the company take energy efficiency seriously and expect AstraZeneca to set the pace for others in the industry.”

Additional plants earning Energy Star recognition nationwide include: Allergan’s Waco, Texas facility; AstraZeneca’s Newark, Del. plant; and Schering-Plough’s Cleveland, Tenn. facility.

The pharmaceutical sector spends more than $800 million on energy annually. EPA worked in partnership with pharmaceutical companies across the United States, including AstraZeneca, to develop the Energy Performance Indicator, which is available to all pharmaceutical companies and enables companies to benchmark their energy performance against others in the industry.
