EPA Grant to Pocono Environmental Educational Center Will Have Students and Parents Studying Water Quality

DINGMANS FERRY, Pa. -- The Pocono Environmental Education Center has received a $2,465 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, mid-Atlantic Region, for a water quality project.

Under the program, about 35 fifth-grade students from Pocono Elementary School, their parents/guardians, and two teachers will work with a naturalist to test and monitor water from ponds and streams in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. After completing the workshop, teachers will use test results in the environmental education program at the school. The program is scheduled for September.

The Pocono Environmental Education Center is a private non-profit organization in the Pocono Mountains that provides environmental education as it relates to the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area. If the workshop is successful, the center will target students and parents from inner-city schools in New York City and Philadelphia to participate in similar workshops.

"This project brings students, parents and teachers together to examine water quality issues and will give them skills and motivation to play an active role in protecting the environment," said W. Michael McCabe, regional administrator for the mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region, 25 grant recipients include schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
