New England Businesses and Organizations Step Up Clean Environment Commitments

(Boston, Mass. – Nov. 6, 2007) - Eighteen members of EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track program recently renewed their voluntary commitments to exceptional environmental practices, while 12 new groups have joined the partnership. The 30 businesses and institutions include members from each of the six New England states.

Performance Track is a voluntary EPA program that complements regulatory approaches to achieve a cleaner environment by using new tools and strategies that recognize and drive environmental excellence. There are more than 450 members nationwide, including facilities from major corporations, small businesses, and the public sector. EPA’s New England regional office now has a total of 56 memberships.

“Performance Track is showing that many private sector New Englanders understand that doing what's good for the environment is also good for business,” said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator for EPA's New England Office. “EPA is proud of the continued dedication of its program members who are finding new ways to expand their commitments to help better protect our air, water and land.”

Sixteen of the eighteen renewing Performance Tack members are “charter members” who have been in the program for six years and are renewing for three more. The 18 renewing members have made a total of sixty new commitments. Thirteen of those eighteen have made energy commitments, eight of which are energy challenge commitments, and two have made water challenge commitments. Six have chosen the new category of "alternate commitments" which allows a facility to address state, regional or local priorities in innovative ways.

Of the twelve new Performance Track members in New England, the U.S. Postal Service is a significant contributing force, with 10 facilities in Conn., Mass. and Maine making commitments to improved environmental performance.
