PHILADELPHIA – Cytec Engineered Materials, Inc. has settled alleged violations of hazardous waste regulations at its facility at 1300 Revolution St., Havre De Grace, Maryland. The company manufactures materials for aerospace and other extreme-demand environments.

Cytec Engineered Materials agreed to pay a $14,300 penalty to resolve an EPA complaint alleging violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which governs the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. RCRA is designed to protect public health and the environment, and avoid costly cleanups, by requiring the safe, environmentally sound disposal of hazardous waste. According to EPA’s December 13, 2002 complaint, an inspection on March 5, 2002 revealed that Cytec violated its RCRA permit by storing an open 55-gallon barrel of solvent methylene chloride, failing to maintain air emission controls for the open container, and failing to have adequate leak containment in the barrel-yard. EPA also cited the company for failing to have required manifests or other documents for four hazardous wastes shipments from the plant in September and December 2000.
As part of the settlement, the company neither admitted nor denied the alleged violations, but has certified that the facility is now in compliance with applicable RCRA regulations.
