U.S. EPA fines Long Beach fiberglass firm $29,317 for hazardous waste violations

     LOS ANGELES - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently fined Custom Fiberglass Manufacturing Co., of Long Beach, Calif., $29, 317 for multiple hazardous waste violations, including storing hazardous waste without a permit and failure to have a personnel training program, all violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
     "The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act protects communities by establishing regulations that companies must follow to manage their hazardous waste properly," said Jeff Scott, Director of the EPA's Waste Division in San Francisco. "The EPA will continue to strictly enforce regulations governing facilities that generate hazardous waste."
 
     The EPA inspected Custom Fiberglass Manufacturing Co. - which produces fiberglass truck tops - in August, 2003.  Based on this inspection, the EPA discovered 39 poorly labeled drum containing hazardous waste, two improperly identified five-gallon buckets of hazardous waste and twenty 55 gallon drums of ignitable hazardous waste stored closer than 50 feet from its property fence line.
 
     Upon reviewing Custom Fiberglass Manufacturing Co.'s management records, the EPA also discovered that the firm did not maintain personnel training records and the personnel responsible for handling waste did not receive appropriate training.

     Custom Fiberglass Manufacturing Co. cooperated with EPA officials and quickly rectified the violations.
