U.S. EPA ADMINISTRATOR BROWNER TO HOST A TOWN HALL MEETING IN TAMPA, FLA. TO DISCUSS CHALLENGES FACING THE NATION’S OCEANS AND COASTAL AREAS
Browner to Hear from Public in Preparation for Clinton Administration National Ocean Conference
MEDIA ADVISORY
U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will host in Tampa, Fla. on Monday, June 1, at 3 p.m. a town hall meeting with state and local officials, the business community, and environmental and citizen groups to discuss the opportunities and challenges the nation faces to restore and preserve our irreplaceable ocean resources. Browner will give remarks detailing actions under President Clinton’s Clean Water Action Plan to restore and protect oceans and coastal areas, and then open the meeting to public discussion on environmental and public health issues related to oceans, including concerns regarding public health risks from pollution, fisheries management, shellfish consumption, development management, beach closures, and fish contamination.
In recognition of 1998 as the International Year of the Ocean, President Clinton and Vice President Gore are hosting the first-ever National Ocean Conference on June 11 & 12 in Monterey, Calif. to bring together government experts, business executives, scientists, environmentalists, elected officials, and the public to formulate a national strategy to restore and protect our oceans.
In preparation for the June 1998 conference, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior, and other federal agencies are holding “town hall” meetings on the east and west coasts to hear public concerns about ocean related environmental and public health issues.
