EPA REGION 4 ANNOUNCES WASTEWATER TREATMENT AWARDS

The United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region 4 announced today the winners in the Region 4 EXCELLENCE IN WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT AWARDS. The award program recognizes excellence in three different areas: Operations and Maintenance, Beneficial Use of Biosolids, and Municipal Water Use Efficiency. The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Excellence Awards recognize plant personnel and local officials for outstanding operations and maintenance of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants over the last two years. The criteria for the awards emphasize use of innovative O&M approaches, process control, effective financial management, ongoing operator training, and laboratory and maintenance management. The award categories are based on plant size and level of treatment. Creative and widely applicable sludge handling techniques are vital to the nation's efforts to protect and improve our soil and water resources. These awards focus attention on the critical need to develop and implement management practices which use sludge beneficially and are environmentally safe, economical and acceptable to the public.
