EPA ANNOUNCES 1998 MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COUNCIL
EPA announces 11 new members to the National Environmental Education Advisory Council.Under the National Environmental Education Act of 1990 (NEEA), the council advises the EPAAdministrator on the implementation of the NEEA; reports to Congress on the status of environmental education in the U.S.; and makes recommendations for strengthening environmental education at national, state, and local levels. Next year’s council will be responsible for implementing the recommendations found in the Council’s 1996 Report to Congress which include: making environmental education a priority across the country and enhancing EPA’s leadership role; increasing and sustaining support for state, local and tribal efforts; leveraging public and private resources and strengthening long-term cross sector partnerships; enhancing and increasing support for professional development for teachers and non-formal educators; targeting new audiences; and encouraging environmental careers. The new members come from across the country with a wide range of public and private expertise in environmental education: Dr. Trudi Volk, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill.; Dr. Paulette Johnson, Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, Pa.; Claudia Fowler -- Louisiana Public Broadcasting, Baton Rouge, La.; Barbara Pietrucha, Neptune Middle School, Neptune, N.J.; Mike Way, Colorado Forest Service and Colorado Alliance for EE, Denver, Colo.; Colleen Murakami, State Department of Education, Hawaii; Catania Galvan, Multicultural Environmental Communications, San Francisco, Calif.; Susan Seacrest, Groundwater Foundation, Lincoln, Neb.; Cynthia A. Georgeson, S.C. Johnson & Sons Inc., Racine, Wisc.; Andrew W. Savitz, Coopers & Lybrand L.L.P., Boston, Mass.; and Bob Kochtitsky, representing the Senior American category and a volunteer for numerous environmental and environmental education organizations in Jackson, Miss.
