Connecticut Businesses and Water Suppliers Recognized for Protecting Drinking Water

BOSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with New England Water Works Association, today recognized a Connecticut business and water supplier for their extraordinary efforts to reduce potential stormwater impacts to a public drinking water supply in their town.

Water Supplier-Business Partnership Honors were given at a meeting of the Connecticut section of the American Water Works Association May 23 in Brewster, Mass., to Wolman Construction in Waterford, Conn., as well as its local water supplier, Groton Utilities in Groton, Conn. Wolman Construction and its water supplier worked together to reduce their impact on drinking water supplies from the Poheganut Reservoir.

On the recommendation of Groton Utilities, Wolman Construction incorporated into the project designs for stormwater treatment and collection as well as conservation measures.

"Businesses and water suppliers can work together to protect New England's drinking water supplies," said Ira Leighton, acting regional administrator for EPA New England. "Today's award winners are planning wisely by encouraging protection of their valuable drinking water supplies. As demand for clean water supplies increases, more innovative projects such as that in Groton are crucial to ensure the future of our water supplies."
