(Spokane, Wash.—4/22/2009) Gonzaga University students received national recognition this week for their work on green energy for a proposed new dormitory in Kenya. The Environmental Protection Agency recognized the students for their work in the nationwide People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Student Design Competition for Sustainability.

The students received a $10,000 grant from the EPA in November to promote sustainable technology in Africa. They presented their project at the annual People, Prosperity and the Planet conference in Washington DC from April 18-21 on the National Mall.

The students are studying the use and practicality of water filtration technologies, biomass utilization and green energies to be used at the proposed dormitory in Kitale, Kenya. Four students will travel to Kenya this summer and meet with a local advisor to begin building the water filter manufacturing facility. The project will be built by local Kenyans with local materials.
