(Denver, Colo. -- Aug. 22, 2006) EPA and BIA are extending the public review and comment period for the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the draft National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation's Proposed Clean Fuels Refinery Project. Public comment on the draft EIS and the draft NPDES permit will be accepted through September 14.

The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation -- also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes -- are proposing to build a new 15,000 barrels-per-day clean fuels refinery and grow hay for buffalo in the northeast corner of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in Ward County, near Makoti in North Dakota. The proposed refinery would be located on 190 acres of a 469-acre site the MHA Nation owns. The remaining 279 acres would be used to grow hay for buffalo on the Reservation.
